Improvements Underway at the English Point Trail System

The English Point Trail system—one of the most popular recreation areas in the Hayden Lake community—is set to receive significant upgrades. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the trail network includes routes on both sides of Hayden Lake Road and has experienced wear in recent years, especially after timber thinning on the west side unintentionally caused water pooling, trail widening, and vegetation damage.

To restore and improve the area, Friends of North Idaho Trails (FONIT) selected English Point as its first major project. In partnership with the Hayden Lake Watershed Association, the group helped secure a Recreational Trails Program grant with additional matching funds provided by local organizations, businesses, and community members.

Work is beginning in fall 2024 with upgrades to the parking lot, which will be closed for about three days while improvements are made. This will be followed by drainage fixes, tread repairs, and vegetation brushing along the trails. New signage is expected to be installed in spring 2025.

These upgrades aim to protect the environment, enhance the hiking experience, and ensure that English Point remains a valuable outdoor destination for the community.
