Land use regulations

As part of our stewardship of Hayden Lake, the Watershed Association tries to keep our membership up to date on new developments in the major land use regulations that impact the watershed. Here are some of the issues we’re following for you:

Kootenai County Unified Land Use Code Project

Kootenai County is revising and updating their land use codes to correspond with the recently adopted new Comprehensive Plan. More information can be found here:

Grazing rights – Members have brought to our attention some concerns about open range cattle fouling streams that flow into Hayden Lake. For those of you interested in more information about this issue please see the following section of Idaho Code that concerns Herd Districts:

The Board will be working to support members who are organizing a grass roots effort to convert the current open range grazing designation to a herd district that will obligate the owner of the livestock to control their damage to tributary streams to Hayden Lake in order to better preserve water quality.

Please let us know if there are other land use issues that you would like to bring to the attention of the board!
